Look, don't tell me my gay atheist conservative right wing Republican friends can't exist. They're not unicorns, damn it. People don't fit into your neat little boxes. And don't you dare tell me that it is impossible to be a gay atheist conservative right wing Republican living in Virginia with a long term same sex partner. I just talked to both of them on the phone about their cat's failing health. They exist!
You know what, stop talking. Just shut up.
What the hell is wrong with people? People exist outside of boxes and stereotypes whether you want them to or not. In fact, one of the most amusing things I have ever, ever heard was "Your friend claims to be a gay pagan pro-choice conservative Republican? Then he's not a real Republican, because real Republicans can't be gay or pagan or pro-choice." This was said by a left wing liberal Democrat who bragged about being accepting of all people no matter what and who claimed to never stereotype people. I almost cyber-bitchslapped him.
It's even funnier than the guy who told me I was a bad pagan because I was not a liberal Democrat.
Damn it, humanity, stop making me facepalm and headdesk all over the place.
Boxes. They can be broken. Seriously.
Argh.

This is why I stay out of politics. Politics make my head hurt.

If I wasn't in so much physical pain right now, I might rant more, but this is all I can come up with.

I hate politics, too. My father was obsessed with politics and I swear they raised his blood pressure (he died presumably of a heart attack). He was an extremely right-wing Libertarian. But he was also crazy, so take that with a grain of salt.

I've been around a bunch of far right wing Libertarians. Fascinating viewpoints, really. A little strange when combined with genuine mental instability. I don't think I'd want to be around your father if he were still alive, though, from what you've written about him. He was a misogynist, wasn't he?

My husband is sort of a moderate Libertarian, in a way. He shares some Libertarian beliefs but not all. It always bothers me when people slam libertarianism the same way they slam conservatism or liberalism. Maybe I just want people to play nice and coexist.

My father was more than a misogynist -- he was quite literally prejudiced against all people who weren't him! He was also racist and homophobic (though I think homophobic the least of the three). The only people he physically attacked, aside from my mother, were always straight white men, though.

Wow. Psychologists would have a field day with that one. Was he schizophrenic as well?

Probably, but he didn't trust doctors (especially psychiatrists/psychologists), so we rarely saw them.

I think that people forget that politics is more than just two sides of a coin.
There is social and economic axis to look at for one thing.

It's like looking at a rainbow and telling the color green to pick black or white.

Yes, exactly.

Most of my friends are all over the place politically. Some of them identify as conservative, with "liberal ideals" such as pro-choice, pro-gay rights, etc. But who's to say that being pro-choice and pro-gay is only for liberals? That's what annoys me. These boxes. These "rules." Show me a rule, and I will show you a handful of people who defy that rule.

I've met economically conservative gay folks before, but I think I'd be pretty confused if I met someone who was (openly) gay and socially conservative. I'm sure they exist, somewhere, I just don't understand *why*.

Sometimes I look at C. (one half of the abovementioned gay couple) and wonder how he could be socially conservative, myself, but... there he is. He also has a surprising amount of hatred in him. I'd classify him as a misanthrope.

I'm a bisexual pagan feminist, and I only voted for Obama after weeks of carefully weighing what I wanted against what the candidates had to offer. I had likes and dislikes about them both.

I hold both strong conservative and strong liberal opinions, and my head has yet to explode. Funnily enough, both my conservative and my liberal friends understand me and why I believe what I do. I guess the key word there is "friends".

*hugs you*

That said, OMG LET'S BE UNICORNS TOGETHER!!!1! My purple mane would look smashing with white hair and a silver horn!

I want a shiny red mane and a gold horn!

Also, YAY your icon.

Also, THANK YOU. I did the exact same thing you did regarding Obama, and I am in the exact same space as you are regarding my friends. I wouldn't BE friends with these people if we couldn't get along the way we do.

People say "I can imagine [people with vastly contradicting political views] existing, but I can't imagine why!" and I just want to smack my forehead until it bleeds. What the fuck do you mean, you can't imagine why they exist? They're people. They have minds of their own. They have opinions of their own. They don'y fit into those fucking little boxes. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

You know what, let's all be unicorns. If people don't want to imagine us existing, that's fine. We can go live by ourselves and they won't get to join our fancy parties. With bonfires. And cake.
