Geography without caffeine
Nov. 25th, 2003 09:47 pmThis place is so tranquil. You could sleep for days. Of course, neither of us has had coffee yet.
I played model for Mom's class this morning in Southampton. Everyone loved me--said I was inspiring, that I was beautiful, that my poses looked like something out of Degas and Rodan. That really flattered me. It was also great to walk around and see people's drawings, because you see how strangers draw you, how they see you, and it was all quite lovely. I was nervous at first, during my first action poses, probably from standing on the high platform. And possibly from overhearing Mom's story of her ordeal.
It turns out that my mother's appendix had not burst. It had died. Days before. There were no symptoms, nothing. Saturday, she felt funny. Sunday, she had a bloated belly and a 102 fever--something that had never happened. She asked Dad to take her to the hospital. Seven hours later after tests, they cut her open at her request--and discovered that the appendix was gangrenous. It was poisoning her. Had she not been as strong and healthy, had she waited one more day, she would have died. The doctors had been stunned; told her she was very, very lucky.
So that shook me up. But later, my poses got more relaxed, and I walked out happy, glowing and flattered and $65 bucks richer. I met Adam in town and we went back to Sag Harbor to eat pizza at Conco D'Oro. I am determined to eat at all my favorite hometown places, so next is the Harbor Deli (next to Conco D'Oro) for the best chicken cutlet sandwich I've ever had.
I am so happy to be back home for even a few days. It relaxes the hell out of all of me, it really does.
