The funny thing about fandoms (MLP, Firefly, Marvel vs. DC, New York Yankees, whatever) is that they are like religions: sure, there are lots of nice decent folks who just do the thing and enjoy it, and then there are always a few super-zealots who make the rest of the group look bad with their extremist views and "we-are-right-everyone-else-is-wrong" attitudes.
Ultimately, you like what you like, and that's that. If you find others who are cool with that, great. If you want to have conventions, also great. Just follow the first rule of everything: DON'T BE A DICK.
