So now they're saying that chocolate is very good for you--as long as you eat dark chocolate and cocoa, because it contains the same stuff as in certain teas that can promote heart and immune health. Plus it makes you happy and boots feelings of well-being. Who knew? (Okay, I did, but now so do you.)
Funny thing happened this morning--my boss, Ray, mentions that a publisher sent the library a bill for $1.75. So I suggested that he just tape that amount into a note and stick it in the envelope. Better yet, make it two dimes and write, "keep the change." That's exactly what I did my first year in college when I got my very first phone bill for nineteen cents. It's not as funny as what happened to my then-best-friend Tish. She got a phone bill for zero dollars. They kept sending her threatening letters about cutting off her phone service if she didn't pay the amount of zero dollars. We considered calling them and telling them their computer was moronic, but thought it would be funnier if Tish wrote them a check for zero dollars, and scribbled in the memo line, "Fix your computer!" They didn't bother her again after that.
This weekend should relieve lots of stress and be filled with bounciness. *waves to Beca* I am looking forward to a drama-free, "ow-mommy-it-hurts"-free weekend. Possibly with cheesecake.

Dear gods, Pepsi has vanilla. Why? Oh, right--because Coke did it first. Sigh.

On another note: This one situation at work has been bugging me. Our IT department in the DC office has been jerked around lately. First, they brought in this wonderful temp, Myrtis, to fill in the need for more techs. However, they have not actually hired her yet, depsite having kept her around for almost a year. On top of that, they fired both Chris and Pete, who were the network systems administrator and head tech when I got here. Chris was pretty cool, but Pete and I had become friends. He even knew about OWBN--he'd played a Gangrel. Then one day Chris was gone, and before you knew it so was Pete. I'm not kidding when I say it's a conspiracy. I found out that the firm had forced them to leave--bought them off or just made their lives miserable so they'd leave quietly on their own. In the meantime, we had Anita, another tech, who was okay, but nothing like Pete. And I had thrown resumes of friends at them, but they kept saying, "No, too overqualified." I ask you, why is being overqualified a bad thing? Because, they say, it wouldn't be fair to pay a lower salary to person of higher caliber.
Oh really? What about people who've been out of work, who can do the work, who are willing to take what they can get? Sigh. They eventually did hire people to take the place of Chris and Pete, but I don't really know what Dane, the new tech, does, and while I like Norma, the new network admin, she just doesn't bring that good vibe. And why on earth can't they just hire Myrtis? She's good--she's one of the best I've seen. It really makes me grind my teeth.
Overqualified, my ass.

Yet another note: So I've found a dignified way to get clean hair without a shower. Sometimes when I get to work, my hair will be yucky and feel unwashed and stick to my skull. I bought something from KMS called Do-Over spray, a dry shampoo spray, but it had some sort of moisturizer that didn't really "wash" the oil out. So I got a tiny bottle of shampoo to keep in my desk, and I'd duck into the bathroom, wet my head in the sink, lather, wet again, use a paper towel, and brudh through. But that was messy and annoying. So I realized that if I spray my hair down with the Do-Over (or even plain water) and then just rub the shampoo in, spray again, and brush it out, my hair will get somewhat clean, if not a little sticky. It'll do until I can get home to a real shower.

Just randomness.

I feel giddy. I'm so pleased right now.
A few weeks ago, I placed an online order for a pair of orthopedic work boots, and they came today. They're beautiful. It's like wearing leather moccasins with thick leather soles (with built in taps!). I swear these boots have a spirit: I started talking to them before I took them out of the box, and I usually only talk like that to inanimate objects when there's some form of life in them. They work very well with my custom orthotics, even with their own cushioned insoles. They're a 5 1/2, but I can fit the thin orthotics in with no trouble. I usually need a 6 with orthotics, but that was with the old pair from New York. This new orthopedist made me orthotics that are almost paper-thin and seem to be coated with an odor-absorbing material. I also have three other new shoes: two pairs of ankle boots made of real cowboy leather, and a pair of slingback dress shoes with a built-in padded cushion that feels like one of those eggcrate mattresses. So I think I'll be well off for a while. The prices of each of the shoes--which I won't tell--were very worth the comfort. And I'll be able to walk more comfortably too. I'm glad I ran into Watson in that Rite Aid and he tried to help me look for Dr. Scholls; it got me thinking that I really do need a couple of truly good walking boots, be they work or combat.

I haven't felt this satisfied in a while. I'd almost forgotten.

Beca and Watson, I believe this is the quote we were trying to remember that one night:

"To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wildflower:
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour."
