I guess there really is no good way to say this, so I'm just going to say it.
Last night, I got woken up at 12:30 by the phone (phones ringing in the middle of the night are never good, unless it's a long distance lover saying hi). It was Danny. He needed a favor. He needed me to go downstairs to the living room, look through his backpack, and find the paperwork with his car insurance policy. In my jarred sleepy state, I was very confused. I had just been dreaming about him and other friends, a vague dream in which Danny and Jason and Masha and someone else had been standing around in a dark street talking. And then as I was looking for the papers, I heard other voices in the background -- Jason, and Jason's girlfriend Masha, and Jason's ex-girlfriend Arin. And a man's voice, with a heavy accent. And then it hit me -- there had been a car accident.
I was too busy looking for paperwork to ask questions and nobody was saying anything. Finally I found it, and I gave Dan his policy number, and then he hung up.
I went back to bed. Tuesday came and kissed me with kitty kisses and curled up next to me.
An hour and a half later, I heard the front door open and close. People were home. But I was already drifting.
The alarm woke me up at 6:30. On my way out the door, I checked the living room. The lights were on, Danny's computer monitor was on, but Dan was gone. I went to work. I called Dan's cell phone and left a message. Then I called my house. Jason answered. He explained what had happened:
They had all been at Staccato's bar in downtown DC. Danny got drunk. Then he got in his car. (He had just bought the car two weeks earlier from his boss, mind you.) He drove about five blocks. Then he hit a taxi cab.
That was around the time I'd had the apparently clairvoyant dream, just before the phone call.
Danny is okay. Arin, who was in the car, is okay. They are sore and shaken, but okay. No police were called, just a traffic accident; information was exchanged. But Danny's car is wrecked. It needs to be towed, and fixed. Danny will have to pay for the damages to both his car and the cab. The new/used car that Danny had only had on the road with new tags for two weeks. Jason and Masha picked him up and drove him home. He will have to borrow a van from his boss.
I don't know whether to hug him or smack him when I see him. As Beca said, maybe a little of both. I called Adam as soon as I'd called Jason, and left a message. Adam called me back after he'd called Jason after getting my message. Then, after communicating with everyone in my house, the first person I contacted, by phone and not email, was Beca, as she is his "sister" and more than anyone deserved to know. After I got back from lunch, Dan called me back. He's still okay.
So that is how the day as been so far.
I'd rather not say much on the issues of drinking and driving when you have had more than a couple of drinks. Obviously, you don't do it. That is why you crawl into the back seat and nap for an hour or three, or give someone else the keys, or find someplace to lie down. He knew better. Which is why I think we will all wait a while before giving him the "What the fuck were you thinking you idiot" speech. He's most likely giving it to himself right now.
Siiiigh.
EDIT: 6:10 PM. After coming home and talking to Dan, I have learned two very important things: Danny was in fact NOT plastered drunk; only mildly. And, the cab driver was partially at fault for making an illegal sudden U-Turn at a busy intersection.
I am also no longer upset or irritated at Dan. He knows what went wrong. I feel no need to yell at him or use the Stick Of No.

Can spirit guides also be alter egos?

Bad roads. Bad!
Jan. 6th, 2006 09:03 pmUpdates.
Danny got a call from the cab driver he had hit. The man was nice enough to let Dan pay for the damage himself, without getting insurance stuff involved. As it turns out, Danny had only been mildly drunk, not enough to really impair, but still he would have been better off waiting to drive.
And continuing on the subject of vehicular wrecks... Jason and Masha had gone to the grocery store earlier. About fifteen minutes ago, Dan and I heard screeching tires, then mess of sirens. Five minutes after that, Jason and Masha walked it and declared, "We are alive by about ten seconds..."
As it turns out, Masha had just turned the corner onto Laytonia drive and had hit the first curve, when behind them on the road, a Jeep came barreling toward the turn, missed, hit the curb, flipped over, and wrapped around a tree, upside down. If Masha had not driven well past, her car would have been struck.
So now there are police, fire trucks, and ambulances in front of Laytonia Drive.
Danny said, "I think we should go back to the store, buy tons of food, and not leave the house for a month."
