Many Years Ago
Apr. 20th, 2010 04:08 pmOnce upon a time, a child asked me to help her confront the ghost in her bedroom. Her parents kept telling her there was no ghost. I? I helped her perform a silly and sweet ritual that made sure the ghost never returned. G.K. Chesterton was right about the fairy tales.
My parents encouraged my imagination and spirituality almost to extremes. My mother used to believe in all sorts of human experiences like ESP and psychic abilities outside of God or religion, always being atheist. My father was the same, but agnostic. He read Tarot cards with frightening accuracy and everything.
So when their daughter talked about seeing fae creatures in the backyard, they never laughed at her and they never told her it wasn't true. To this day, people will furrow their brows and say, "But if your mother was an atheist, why did she encourage that?" And my reply always is, "There are more things on earth and in our minds than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Children understand things, and so do people who see fairies.
