Oh, hell.

My writerbrain just crapped out on me.

I have one page to go before this chapter ends and I've gone blank (I'm just shy of the eight page minimum, you see, and if I do not meet it by tomorrow I lose my privileges; but beyond that it's about me being blocked).

Fuck. Fuckity fuck.

Erm.

*tries to think*

I am in the middle of a scene in which three dead people are discussing something that may be destroying the world, and one of them is considering calling up a deity and asking her to lend a hand, and the deity will say... something profound, possibly. Most likely "No, sorry" and "Humans really should work out their reality-destroying problems by themselves" and something else to show that I will not be using any deux ex machina in this book.

Hrm. I'd probably say something along the lines of destiny not being an accident nor even a gift but an achievement, an acknowledgment of risk and consequence but a choice to bear those burdens nonetheless. Something in those lines. Funny how fond the Greeks were of their choruses and their deuses all hopping ex machina. I think we're much closer to the Romans with all their revelry and frivolity as opposed to the stolid Greeks, but that's not necessarily a good thing, except perhaps in this regard. The audacity of individual accomplishment, I guess, the notion that one tiny soul can be the fulcrum on which the weight of the world turns....

Oooh, this just made my day.

I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing.

Say what you will about Reagan and his policies (and, of course, all credit to whichever speechwriter came up with this gem), but that's a fantastic quote. I realize this is quickly drifting out of the realm of utility for you, but I found it...irresistible.

That is a fantastic quote! And quite appropriate for the situation.
