That's a really huge idea among ufologists. Many believe that "holy beings" such as Jesus Christ and Ghandi are actually humanoid aliens.
I know of one theory that humans/humanoid aliens came to Earth thousands of years ago and took over whatever life forms were currently living here and completey transformed the atmosphere to be more hospitable towards human life. Sounds too crazy to be true to me, but plenty of people believe in theories like that.
I was never sure just how serious Crick was when he proposed panspermia. It's possible that the common ancestor of earth life was a primitive bacteria-like organism from outer space. But what bothers me about the hypothesis is that nothing is gained if it's true or not. There are no novel predictions that we could test and we still have to explain the origin of life, it just gets moved to a different arena. I am also annoyed that the article implies that there is new evidence for panspermia when really it's just that new evidence suggests that it is simply not impossible!
