I ate breakfast while watching Clash Of The Gods on the History Channel. "Odysseus" was first, which was done very well, very action-packed and beautifully imagined. The attempts to link Odysseus' journey to historical fact seemed cute and generally plausible. I am watching "Beowulf" now. I am enjoying it, especially the possible historical links. However, I personally prefer the version told by Neil Gaiman and Robert Zemeckis.
I have been taking almost everything shown on the History Channel with a grain of salt, ever since watching a couple of doomsday "documentaries" featuring Nostradamus and Mayan calendars. I think I laughed myself into tears at one point. They do love to lay on the fear. But sometimes they do well, like when they talk about Edgar Cayce.
When I was in high school, I wrote my senior thesis on parapsychology and paranormal human abilities that might be actually true. I read books on Edgar Cayce, The Sleeping Prophet. My mother took me to New York City's Paranormal Society headquarters for research, and I spoke to doctors at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, where several of my cousins had been tested for psychic abilities. My father told me stories about his own unusual talents in his youth, and how he had suppressed most of them in the 1970s because he had scared friends and strangers alike with the accuracy of his premonitions. He showed me his old deck of Rider-Waite tarot cards, locked in a wooden box with several seals. We did a reading that sent chills up my spine. The cards occasionally hummed and vibrated. On the day of my wedding in 2005, when I was stressed and panicked beyond imagination, my father stroked my head a few times, pressed his index finger to my forehead, and sent an indescribable sense of calm and healing into my body. He did this to a few others that day, as well. When my father was in his surrealism phase with his paintings (between 1970 and 2000), all of his paintings were infused with a sort of energy that could be sensed by even the most staid nonbelievers. My parents are atheists, but they don't dispute the fact that my father's family actually has psychic abilities to some degree. Even my mother admits to a sixth sense in her own family.

Sometimes the contrast between the way you were raised and the way I was raised is brought out in sharp contrast, this anecdote is one of those times. Not better or worse, just different. I highly doubt my parents would have taken me to a paranormal society to do any sort of research. It's pretty awesome that yours did. :)

Psychic things
Date: 2009-10-05 08:03 pm (UTC)My birth mother dabbled in Tarot for a short period of time, and hinted that our family might have 'something'. She wouldn't say anything concrete, but rattled off something about being the '7th daughter', though she wouldn't elaborate on that either. I just blew it off as babble.
After my NDE, I started 'knowing' things, dreaming things that were precognative, and have had a sense about people, places or things. Though lately, it's not been as frequent. I believe in things of the Paranormal (used to be a hardcore skeptic) and of the Metaphysical.
I just wish I knew if my original birth family was actually 'gifted' with anything. I do Tarot readings for friends and friends of friends. I've done candle magic and other 'things' always with the goal of helping others.

He helped me funnel and guide my energy into his muscles and he did say that I helped. The problem is that I really cannot tell how much I'm doing until I am almost drained.

Watching Reiki and getting an attunement from a good Master level practitioner is very different. Anyone can lay on hands with positive effect but with Attunement you are sort of calibrated and it's quite helpful. I did all kinds of healing work for many years in Seattle from exorcisms/mediumship to crystal healing to shamanic journeying, Akashic reading & Inner Child work… and when I got attuned to Master level Reiki it all really amped up. Then after the certification for Qi healing, once again, it helped so much. Every bit of natural innate gift helps and is only enhanced with training. You would be so well suited, Jo. Follow this one!

Date: 2009-10-06 07:56 pm (UTC)But mostly seeing ghosts. I actually hadn't seen any ghosts for quite awhile until Saturday, when I went to my sister's house to see her and my niece and nephews as the anniversary of my brother-in-law's death approached, I saw him watching me from the front window while the house was empty. As soon as I saw him he turned and moved away. So Mom went in the next day to see if she could find out what was going on; apparently the feeling she got was that he considered it his duty to stay close by and keep an eye on his family unless someone else was there. So it seems he ducked out for awhile until I left, too.

I've only seen ghosts a couple of times, myself -- but I always sense them. They call it Clairsentience. I'm really freaking empathic toward, er, spiritual beings.
If you have anymore stories, feel free to share. I love knowing that people can still be sensitive and intuitive without being called crazy or having a placebo moment. :)
