Huh. Maybe Tom and Katie aren't so insane after all. This is actually a beautiful name.
I love unusual names. I keep trying to come up with interesting names for new characters. I love names that describe beautiful things, like Angelina, or Rose, or Dawn, or Ariana, or Liana.
(When I was a child, for some reason I thought my name was boring. I wanted to expand on it, change it, make it prettier. And then I decided Joanna was a beautiful name, and I learned that my mother had named me after a movie character played by Audrey Hepburn. And then Mom said, "It's a good thing too, because you have her jawline and eyes, and her skin." We laugh, sometimes, because I am so much like my father that Mom isn't sure if she was even there in my conception and birth, and we've joked that I absorbed Audrey Hepburn's spirit, hah. I am nowhere near as amazingly phenomenally soulfully rose-petal beautiful as she, but I like having a somewhat similar look.)
I have often wondered what would be the most intriguing names I could give to human characters, names that really mean something. I'm still thinking about what names I would call the most lovely to my ears.
Names can have power in strange ways. It can affect people in different ways. A name connected to different people can influence those who hear it.
Adam doesn't like the name Sarah at all. He connects it to his first girlfriend, and the relationship ended horribly. He dated another girl named Sarah -- although it was only her nickname, as her real name was unusual -- and again it ended very badly. He's not fond of the name. Yet for me, the name Sarah is lovely and has good memories. My very first friend, when I was a toddler, was a girl named Sarah. For a while I wanted to name my future daughter Sarah.
I have known many girls named Jennifer. One of them, another of Adam's exes, is a vicious whorebitch. Another is one of my dearest sweetest friends. One of my grade school friends was Jennifer. It is a very common name.
My first boyfriend, David, went by his middle name, Damar, since his father was David. His friends called him Dave; his family and I knew him as Damar.
I have actually known people to avoid socializing with a person of a particular name, because someone terrible from their past had the same name.
Names have power.
For humans, everything needs a name. In magick, if you know the name of a thing, you have a link to it. You can affect it and in turn be affected by it. Invoking a name can be powerful, yes.
I am still browsing babynames.com, by the way. I used to collect baby name books. My parents never quite understood why. Even as a child I was fascinated by the power behind names.
Once you name something, a part of it might always be yours.

Date: 2006-09-03 08:54 pm (UTC)Your husband is the first Tristan I know. In fact, I didn't know Tristan was a person's name until I read the story of Tristan and Isolde. I also think your given name is the most fascinating and lovely name I have ever heard -- Winter Rose. Is your maiden name Nightingale? Because that's beautiful, Winter Rose Nightingale.
If you were to ever adopt a child (since you can't bear children), what do you think you would name him or her?

Date: 2006-09-05 01:19 pm (UTC)I Was Born {Two Months Prematurely} In January. The Depths Of "The Bleak Mid~Winter" {*G*} And When I Was Born, I Was So Fragile And Tiny That I Fit In My The Palm Of My Mother's Hand. I Had A Head Of Bright Red Hair And A Determined Will To Survive, And My Mum And Dad Thought That I Resembled A Delicate Rosebud, Struggling Against All Hope, To Bloom In The Freezing Winter Snows. Therefore I Was Named "Winter Rose". Although It Was Soon Discovered That I Was Far Too Bright And Vivacious A Little Girl For The Name "Winter", So Since Then I've Been "Rose" To One And All! :o) {Except When My Mum Is Peeved At Me And Then She Uses My Full Name! LOL!}

Date: 2006-09-05 03:10 pm (UTC)That is so wonderful.
What are your parents' names? Obviously your dad's last name is Nightingale; what's your Mom's maiden name? I'm curious about your whole family now.

Date: 2006-09-05 03:23 pm (UTC)The only Morrighan I know is the baby daughter of my friend Janet James. She and her husband Ian named their first daughter Aislinn and the second Morrigan (without the H). Funny thing is that the girls really embody their names. Aislinn is sweet and delicate with blond features and she is also naturally vegetarian (she just doesn't like the taste of meat no matter what), but Morrigan is big and dark-haired and strong and willfull, and she loves meat. *grin*
What's your Mom's personality like?

Date: 2006-09-05 03:44 pm (UTC)I love when names completely suit the people. Adam couldn't have been given a more perfect name, either. He has a lot of strength and power, and people always seem to listen to him, he has a lot of charisma (even though his theories can be weird, in a good way).
I always try to give my characters names that really fit who they are.

Date: 2006-09-05 05:33 pm (UTC)Oh! Speaking of your winter paleness, I found another face makeup to match you. I stumbled across a company called Raesin Images over the weekend. They make organic and natural mineral cosmetics.
This is what I ordered:
http://www.raesinimages.com/cream%20foundation%20f1matte.htm
The color I have is Linen L1, which seems to be the very lightest color in the line. It's a pale ivory with neutral to rose undertones. You can order a sample, or full size (FS). I think it's even better than those other foundations I recommended to you. It's so creamy and moisturizing that I don't even need a moisturizer under it.
Oh, and if you have a department store or Sephora near you -- or just Sephora online -- try BeneFit's Play Stick Foundation in Jax. It's ivory porcelain for rosy skin.
